EPT Berlin Robbery Under Control

March 10th, 2010

EPT Berlin Robbery

EPT Berlin Robbery

The German police have got back to us with their perspective on the events that occurred at the European Poker Tour (EPT) last week. “The EPT Berlin robbers broke all records in stupidity”, the German police stated.

Predictions are that the thieves will be caught soon as they seem to be an amateur gang and were not careful enough in their procedures. Even though the gang came into the Grand Hyatt wearing masks like decent crooks, they made a horrific error and stopped at a nearby McDonald’s for some food before the crime was committed.

The security cameras at McDonald’s caught the thieves’ faces in full view and it is just a matter of time to identify them now. The German security officers have handled the situation admirably well and hopefully the crime will be resolved soon.

On a different note, in one of the videos taken during the robbery you can see an unarmed security guard throwing objects at the robbers and wrestling with one of them in the ground, but he eventually gave up after being threatened with a machete.

"I acted purely on instinct," said the security guard. "But when his accomplice came at me with a machete I had to let go of him. Naturally it irritates me but I had to protect my own life in the situation."

Alex Kamberis Joins Doyles Room Team

Alex Kamberis Joins Doyles Room Team

Poker legend Doyle Brunson’s poker site Doyle’s Room recently confirmed that they have added Alex Kamberis to their prestigious team of professional poker players - The Brunson 10. The rumour had been going around but it is now a fact that Kamberis will be representing Doyle’s Room around the world.

“I’m really excited that Alex has decided to come on board. He’s a real class act, just a real nice kid, and he’s the type of player that makes us all look forward to the next generation of poker players,” said Doyle Brunson.

Alex Kamberis is only 23 years old but it has been enough time to accumulate a lot of achievements in his poker career. His record is almost as impressive as that of players who have been playing poker for decades, in 2009 only he cashed in 50 online poker tournaments for almost $580,000. In 2008 he made $1.5 million playing online, becoming one of the most financially successful online poker players.

It was also in 2008 when Kamberis won the Player of the Year title by Card Player. During the same year Kamberis played at the Doyle Brunson’s Wednesday Bounty Tournament and it was there where he caught Brunson’s eye. There is no doubt that he is the perfect addition to Doyle Brunson’s team of elite poker players.

Ashton Griffin Takes Down NAPT’s Closure Event

March 3rd, 2010

Ashton Griffin NAPT Winner

Ashton Griffin NAPT Winner

The PokerStars North American Poker Tour (NAPT) wrapped up with the $25,000 High Rollers Shootout event. Ashton ‘ThASHMAN103′ Griffin took the event down and banked $490,000 for it.

The word is that on the day of the final table, Griffin came to play without having slept. The young online poker pro played the day before and won his opening table, hence he made it to the final table to the event. Griffin then went on to play poker online for the rest of the night and came back to play without having slept. He admitted to have taken naps between breaks but I am still impressed by his ability to take down a tournament in that condition.

Griffin faced professional poker pro Hoyt Corkins in heads up play and came out victorious. The format of the Shootout was that the winners of each table took home $75,000 and moved on to the final stage. Then players received a $5,000 bounty for each knockout plus $100,000 going to the player with the most bounties. Griffin got $460,000 for the win and $30,000 for 6 knockouts. However, it was Scott ‘mastrblstr’ Seiver who took the $100,000 prize for knocking out 8 opponents.

These were the final results of the event:

  1. Ashton Griffin
  2. Hoyt Corkins
  3. Joe Cassidy
  4. Scott Seiver
  5. Faraz Jaka
  6. Brett Richey
  7. Peter Eastgate

Poker Players Want AJ Benza Back On High Stakes Poker

March 2nd, 2010

Come Back AJ Benza

Come Back AJ Benza

The sixth season of one of the most popular poker TV shows, High Stakes Poker, is airing and we are seeing a great group of players on our TV screens. However it still seems like some of the poker players in the audience are not entirely satisfied with the how the show is carrying on now that co-commentator AJ Benza is out of the picture.

As we reported earlier, Kara Scott stepped in to co-host the show with Gabe Kaplan. Her role this season is fairly different from the one that AJ Benza used to play and the audience does not seem to have a problem with her being in the show (in fact, most of them love her being there), but they wish they had AJ Benza there again.

The audience of High Stakes Poker stated they feel as if the producers were trying to fix something that was not broken by taking Benza out of the show and have come together to create an online petition to bring AJ Benza back, and they have posted it on the 2+2 Forum.

At the time producers announced that Benza would not continue to be on the show, Benza himself was disappointed. The signatures are coming really fast and the petition is one of the hottest topics on the forum at the moment. Will it work?

Pokerstars EPT Copenhagen Wraps Up

March 1st, 2010

EPT Copenhagen - Pokerstars

EPT Copenhagen - PokerStars

The PokerStars EPT Copenhagen finally came to an end with an intense 4-hour heads-up battle between Swedish Anton Wigg and Italian Francesco De Vivo. After a few ups and downs, Wigg managed to dominate the table and his efforts were rewarded with a €500,000 check.

"It feels wonderful. I was here to win," Wigg said. Then commenting on De Vivo, he said: "I think he played really, really well but he was a little bit passive in the heads up."

When the decisive hand came Wigg was ahead in chips and De Vivo did not catch any of his outs. The money went in with Wigg holding AJ and De Vivo had KT, the board ran Q Q 9 2 8 and we had a winner.

Wigg is a professional poker player from Sweden and he has been on the scene for three years now, even though he is only 22 years old.

These are the final table results of the EPT Copenhagen:

Harrah’s Entertainment Buys Planet Hollywood

February 26th, 2010

Planet Hollywood

Planet Hollywood

The Las Vegas Review Journal broke the news last week that the Nevada Gaming Control Board approved Harrah’s Entertainment purchase of Planet Hollywood. "The existing Planet Hollywood was headed for some type of restructuring, perhaps a bankruptcy," Chairman Dennis Neilander said.

Harrah’s Entertainment is the company behind the World Series of Poker (WSOP) brand and there had been rumors going around that the WSOP would change venues from the Rio to Planet Hollywood. The acquisition of Planet Hollywood by Harrah’s is almost a confirmation that the World Series will be running there in 2011.

When Harrah’s closes up the deal with Planet Hollywood it will be the owner of nine prestigious casinos located on the Las Vegas Strip, or in locations very close to it. Those casinos are the Rio, Bally’s, Paris Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, Harrah’s Las Vegas, Imperial Palace, Bill’s, Flamingo and Planet Hollywood.

The acquisition deal is estimated to be $70 million going to the current owners of Planet Hollywood and Harrah’s will take over their debt, and the deal should be closed no later than February 19th. Harrah’s also informed us that most Planet Hollywood employees would be moving to Harrah’s but that there will be a 5% cut in jobs to avoid having two people doing the same thing.

Full Tilt Poker Restrains Sponsored Players from Attending Rivals Poker Events

February 25th, 2010
Full Tilt Restrains Players

Full Tilt Restrains Sponsored Players

The competition between the major online poker rooms seems to be getting fiercer every year.  It was reported by some industry sources that in a recent and fairly controversial move, Full Tilt Poker has told their sponsored professional players to not attend poker tournaments and events that are sponsored by sites considered competition. The territory restrictions are very ambiguous in this statement and nobody from the administrative staff of Full Tilt has confirmed that this “ban” will be enforced.

Their reasoning behind this move is that it is not good for Full Tilt Poker having its players add to the prestige of rival’s tournaments.  News also broke that Howard Lederer has decided to step away from the operational front of Full Tilt Poker and has left Ray Bitar and his team to make all the decisions from now on.

Critics from all poker news sources are already reacting to this. Gary Wise, ESPN poker blogger, wrote the following; “For the last eight years, ‘good for poker’ has been a unifying rally cry. The game and the online industry built upon it, fought for growth and acceptance… are we seeing the increasingly corporate mentality of the industry bring an end to that chapter?” This might be something for all of us to think about.

Clonie Gowen’s Case Against Full Tilt Poker Dismissed

February 24th, 2010

Clonie Gowen vs Full Tilt - Case Dismissed

Clonie Gowen vs Full Tilt - Case Dismissed

At the beginning of this week Clonie Gowen’s lawsuit against online poker room Full Tilt Poker was dismissed by the United States District Court in Las Vegas. Clonie Gowen filed the lawsuit in 2008 and she was demanding compensation for promoting Full Tilt Poker during past years. According to Gowen, she had been promised a 1% share of the company upon joining it but she claims it never happened and that she was offered $250,000 in compensation instead.

When Gowen filed the case she also included members of Team Full Tilt but that was dismissed by the court earlier. After that she was demanding compensation from Tiltware, the company behind Full Tilt Poker and its directors Ray Bitar and Howard Lederer individually.

District Court Judge Robert C. Jones revised the case and in his decision he determined that Clonie Gowen’s attorneys did not have enough plausible evidence to support the case. In his opinion, they did not have enough evidence to prove that their client had been offered that compensation.

"As a general partner, Plaintiff would also be 1% liable for the losses of Full Tilt Poker… But nowhere in the allegations does Plaintiff allege, consistent with a general partnership, that the agreement made her liable for 1% of Full Tilt Poker’s losses before it became profitable. Therefore, it is not plausible that a partnership, limited or general, was offered," Judge Jones wrote in his decision.

Isildur1 Back On Two Feet at the Virtual High Stakes Tables

Isildur1 Back at Virtual High Stakes Tables

Isildur1 Back at Virtual High Stakes Tables

This year a new player came into the online poker arena to bleed the money out of the most reputable professional poker players online. Even though his identity has not yet been revealed, Isildur1 keeps making the poker tabloids and he has done it once more as he is back into the high stakes arena.

You may be wondering “was he ever gone?”  Let’s look back a bit in time and recall that week in which Isildur1 lost slightly over $4 million against Brian Hastings, Cole South and Brian Townsend. We thought it would take him awhile to come back to play at the same stakes level but surprisingly it took him less than we expected.

On Tuesday, Isildur1 managed to win back $800K against Brian Hastings and Ilari Sahamies. He took $451K and $162K from the players, respectively. According to the stats on Full Tilt, Isildur1 has played 10,794 hands and won $1.61 million in four days last week.

Vitaly Lunkin Awarded With Player of The Year

February 19th, 2010

Vitaly Lunkin Player of the Year

Vitaly Lunkin Player of the Year

On Friday, February 5th the Ninth Annual European Poker Awards took place at the Aviation Club de France. It was professional poker player Vitaly Lunkin who took the highest honor of the evening when he was awarded with ‘Player of the Year’.

Among other top recipients, Patrik Antonius was awarded with the ‘Internet Player of the Year’ trophy and Jeff Lisandro won the Outstanding Tournament Performance of the Year. For Rookie of the Year, the European Poker Awards chose Antoine Saout who made it to both the WSOP and WSOPE final tables last year.

Competition was tough as 2009 was a very competitive year in poker, and we saw a lot of new good players join the global field, while some of the top pros managed to become even better. We surely expect to see the same again this year.

These were the results for the main awards that were given out:

  • Player of the Year: Vitaly Lunkin (Russia)
  • Europe’s Leading Lady: Sandra Naujoks (Germany)
  • Rookie of the Year: Antoine Saout (France)
  • Outstanding Tournament Performance of the Year: Jeff Lisandro (Italy)
  • Internet Player of the Year: Patrik Antonius (Finland)
  • Poker Staff Person of the Year: Edgar Stuchly (Austria)

Manchester United and Manchester City to Battle at the Poker Tables

February 19th, 2010

Manu vs Man City at Poker

Manu vs Man City at Poker

News broke during this past week that two of the biggest giants of soccer will soon be facing each other not only at the soccer field but also at the poker tables. The two teams we are talking about are two of the best teams in English soccer, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Wes Brown, who is a Manchester United’s defender, has decided to organize a poker tournament for the two teams. The event is planned to occur at the local golf club, the Manchester’s Mere Golf Club, and what Brown is trying to do is relieve the tension between the two teams and provide a positive example to all of their fans.

This idea was born after the last clash of the team during the Carling Cup where there were some strong disagreements on the field and in the stands. The teams are meant to meet again in April for their next Premier League match and they want to be on good terms by then.

The soccer players are planning to go full Las Vegas style in the tournament and the golf club will be decorated accordingly.

We just love to hear about poker bringing people together in all fields!

Doyle Brunson On Phil Hellmuth’s Grand Entry At The WSOPE

Doyle Brunson Dissaproves of Phil Helmuth as Caesar

Doyle Brunson Dissaproves of Phil Helmuth as Caesar

As we previously reported, the broadcasting of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event started running on ESPN this past Sunday. The first episode was just fantastic but it included a remarkable moment between the greatest poker legend ever, Doyle Brunson, and the poker player who has won the most WSOP bracelets in history, Phil Hellmuth.

The both players engaged in a conversation in which Doyle Brunson criticized Hellmuth’s flashy entry to the event. If you cannot recall it, Hellmuth showed up at the WSOPE Main Event with slave girls, centurions and himself dressed as Caesar – just as he did at the WSOP in Las Vegas a few months ago.

The poker legend made it clear that he could not agree with the “grand entry” in this recorded conversation:

Brunson: Tell me the truth, are you embarrassed at all?
Hellmuth: Not at all.
Brunson: Not at all? I’m embarrassed for you.
Hellmuth: Doyle, I thought you of all people would be proud of it, knowing that it’s putting money in your pocket
Brunson: Making a circus out of a poker game?
Hellmuth: Are you kidding me? I add a little drama, a little theatre to the game.
Brunson: If people want to go to the theatre, they go to the theatre.
Hellmuth: I’ll ask you one quick question. Do you think it’s bad for poker when I show up like that?
Brunson: Yes.

DURRRR’S CHALLENGE UPDATE: Tom Dwan Increases His Lead.

February 15th, 2010

Tom Dwan Increases His Lead

Tom Dwan Increases His Lead

Last week professional poker player Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius were at it at the tables again. They were playing again for the durrrr’s online challenge which started last year and has still quite a lot of hands to go.

In case this sounds unfamiliar, durrrr’s Challenge involves opponents playing Dwan in 50,000 hands of $200/$400 or higher on four tables simultaneously. If successful, the opponent will get 3:1 odds from Dwan and the initial buy-in is $500,000.

The first one on the list for this was Patrik Antonius and there have been a lot of swings since the challenge began but it is now durrrr who seems to have a great advantage. The players gambled for 3 hours and a total of 833 hands.

Durrrr was already on the lead by $1,077,932 and in this last session he added $314,828 more, and he now has a $1,392,760 advantage.

As of today almost two thirds of the challenge has been played and we might have to wait a couple of months more to watch the end of it. Things could still change as this game has had massive swings in relatively low numbers of hands.

WSOP To Change Venues In 2011

February 12th, 2010

WSOP Moving to Planet Hollywood

WSOP Moving to Planet Hollywood

Since 2005 the World Series of Poker (WSOP) has been taking place at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Rio is a great place that can manage to fit all the players that come to an event like the WSOP, however many players think that there is not really much more to it than the space available.

There were rumours going around that the WSOP was thinking of changing venues and it was recently posted on the Cake Poker Blog that the WSOP will be moving from the Rio to Planet Hollywood in 2011.

Poker players also feel that the Rio is too far away from the Strip, and Planet Hollywood is perfectly located at the heart of the Strip. The word is also that the WSOP brand owners, Harrah’s Entertainment, are apparently very close to closing a purchase deal with Planet Hollywood.

For 2010 the WSOP will still run at the Rio and they only plan to do the move in 2011. Personally, I believe that the Rio does a good job at the moment, and while Planet Hollywood is also a reputable location, they will have a lot of high expectations to meet.

Tom Dwan And Phil Ivey Play Largest Pot In The History Of Televised Poker

February 12th, 2010

Tom Dwan & Phil Ivey Play for Largest Pot on TV

Tom Dwan & Phil Ivey Play for Largest Pot on TV

During the past year it seems the online poker prodigy Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan has been involved in setting records for the highest pots played in online poker history, live poker history and now it is televised poker history.

At the last episode of Full Tilt Poker’s Million Dollar Cash Game professional poker players Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey got involved in a hand that would make history. The hand involved an incredible sum of $1,108,500 and made it the largest pot ever played in televised poker history.

Of course that to be the largest pot in televised poker history, an outstanding hand was involved. I will not tell you the details, but all I will say is that when Ivey looks at the cards he exclaims “Wow” and you can almost see a tiny bit of emotion in his face when he realizes what just happened.

Definitely this was a battle between two of the best poker players in the world and it is quite hard to decide who has the bigger edge to start with. I recommend that you take a look at the video for some good high stakes entertainment.
